To speak of Tavel rosé is actually redundant; Tavel really only makes rosé. Red is technically allowed, but amounts to a tiny fraction of production. On the right bank of the Rhone, close to Avignon, and sheltered from the worst of the Mistral by the Montagne Noire mountain range, the Prieuré de Montézargues dates to 1199. It was originally a monastery. Now those old stone buildings produce a robust rosé of Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Syrah, Clairette, and Cinsault. Juicy flavors of watermelon, cranberry, and citrus are balanced with a stony minerality. It is-simply-delicious.
