Did you miss Pennywise? Now, why would you do that? Do you already have way too much delicious wine to drink? Or do you prefer NOT to save big bucks on buying delicious wine? What’s that? You were busy? Well, in that case, we’ll help you out, because we just *happen* to have bought extra of one of the favorites from our last Pennywise.
Masseria Li Veli hails from Puglia’s Salento peninsula. If you’re comparing Italy to a high-heeled boot, the Salento is the stiletto heel jutting out into the Adriatic Sea. It’s hot. It’s dry. It is incredibly windy, so much so that young vines simply must be trained low to the ground, or they would be uprooted and blown away.
Not that any of Li Veli’s vines are young….most of their vineyards are at least 40+ years old. Some are approaching 80. The vines look like fat, sturdy little trees. They hoard whatever moisture they can find in the soil and combine it with near-constant sunshine to yield reds as warm and spicy as a Salento summer.
The Pezzo Morgana vineyard is one of the oldest, planted to bush-trained Negroamaro, one of Puglia’s signature red grapes. This Riserva-level Salice is 100% Negroamaro; they elect not to add the usual dose of Malvasia Nera to soften it. Flavors of plum jam, chocolate-dipped cherries, licorice, black pepper, and cinnamon mingle with vanilla, caramel, and toasty oak from its 12 month stay in French barrique. It’s exotic. Warming. Delicious. Really, just dynamite.

The idea that became Pour Richard’s was born of many late nights drinking wine with old friends. At least half of every couple worked in wine sales. Sooner or later, after a couple of great bottles, we’d start talking about how we never got to sell our favorite wines. Many of the best bottles in our respective warehouses never saw the light of day because we were all way too busy fulfilling our quotas on the big national brands. Small family vineyards, fun new regions? Those mostly sat there until we closed them out. “Wouldn’t it be great”, we all said, “if we could sell the things we drink?” So, that’s exactly what we’re doing!
